De deelnemers aan de schaakmatches in Hoogeveen zijn bekend. Van 21 tot en met 26 oktober speelt wereldtopper Vasily Ivanchuk in het Hoogeveense raadhuis tegen wereldtalent Wei Yi uit China. Het Nederlandse toptalent Jorden van Foreest komt uit tegen de sterke grootmeester Adhiban Baskaran uit India.

De Oekraïener Vasily Ivanchuk is al dertig jaar een wereldtopspeler en weet nog steeds regelmatig het publiek te verrassen met zijn eigenzinnige gedrag en briljante vondsten op het bord. De 18-jarige Wei Yi wordt sinds enkele jaren als een mogelijke opvolger van wereldkampioen Magnus Carlsen gezien en heeft al diverse grote toernooien gewonnen.

Het grote Nederlandse talent Jorden van Foreest, nu ook 18 jaar en vorig jaar al nationaal kampioen, komt uit tegen één van de grootste exponenten van het huidige Indische schaak, Adhiban Baskaran. Adhiban is een innemende persoonlijkheid die aan het begin van dit jaar iedereen verraste met een derde plaats in het Tata Steel toernooi.

Het toernooi heeft een financiële injectie gekregen van een groep van 32 lokale ondernemers, die onder de naam Corps 32 een bijdrage leveren aan het evenement.

De matches worden dagelijks vanaf 14.00 uur gespeeld van zaterdag 21 tot en met donderdag 26 oktober. Gelijktijdig vindt een sterk open toernooi plaats in het Hoogeveense raadhuis. Dat begint op zaterdag 21 oktober en eindigt op zaterdag 28 oktober (9 ronden). Voor dit toernooi hebben zich op dit moment al de grootmeesters Abhijeet Gupta (de winnaar van vorig jaar), Sipke Ernst, Roeland Pruijssers en Sahai Grover (evenals Gupta afkomstig uit India) aangemeld.

Op dezelfde dagen als het Open toernooi vinden ook twee amateurtoernooien plaats, het ene ‘s ochtends en het andere ‘s middags.

The Hoogeveen Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday 21st October through Saturday 28th October 2017. The tournament consists of the Hoogeveen Matches, the Hoogeveen Open and two amateur tournaments. All tournaments will take place in the attractive town hall of Hoogeveen. In the chess café, well-known commentators will analyse the games with the audience. The games can also be followed live on this website.

Hoogeveen Open

In the Hoogeveen Open, 9 rounds will be played. There is space for approximately 84 players with a minimal rating of 2000. The Hoogeveen Open is an international tournament, and consequently (grand-) master norms can be achieved. 

There is a total prize fund of € 8,000 with a 1st prize of € 2,500.

New in this year’s tournament: after the 7th round, the top 4 qualifies for the semi-finals and finals to decide the top prizes of the Open tournament. The remaining players of the Open group will play a regular 8th and 9th round. Detailed information will follow later.

Amateur toernaments

Group I (= afternoon group): for players with a rating up to 2100. Group II (= morning group): also for players with a rating up to 2100. Each group can contain a maximum of 84 players. They play 8 rounds. 1st prize for both groups is € 250 each.

Rate of play

The rate of play for the Hoogeveen Open is 40 moves in 90 minutes, 30 minutes extra time + an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.
The rate of play for the Amateur Group I (afternoon group) is 40 moves in 90 minutes, 30 minutes extra time + an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.
The rate of play for the Amateur Group II (morning group) is 90 minutes + 30 seconds extra time per move starting from move 1.

At the closing ceremony, tournament director Loek van Wely spoke of a very enjoyable jubilee edition, ‘with two top matches with exciting chess, and a strong Open. And this time we had a beautiful art exhibition by Yvon Drummen, who also made the prizes for the matches. I hope everybody had a good time.’
 

Next, Van Wely handed out the prizes for the Amateur group 1 together with chief arbiter Frans Peeters (the other Amateur group had been finished in the morning). Oele Dijkhuis won first prize here with 8 out of 8. About this youth player, a rival had said, “That little guy is really good.’ Second to seventh prizes were for Christiaan Mol, Henk Sijen, David Knight, Harry Boerkamp, Dick Stavast and Bartelo Oegema.

Van Wely expressed his joy about the fact that several norms had been made in the Open. And: ‘I was worrying about the Indian domination, and I thought: if this goes wrong we may have to invade India. But today I did some calculating, and it turns out that together they have won 28 rating points here. I wonder if this is enough reason for retaliation.’ He didn’t give an answer to this question yet… ‘The Netherlands disappointed a little, with the exception of Lucas van Foreest – I would have preferred to see it the other way round’, Van Wely said, teasing Lucas as usual.

Norm certificates were handed out to Casper Schoppen (14, his first IM norm), Lucas van Foreest (15) and 15-year-old Rakesh Kumar Jena, for whom it was his third IM norm. Van Foreest scored 3 points out of 5 games against grandmasters; if we count his earlier GM norm, he now has three norms, and so he can apply for the title if he can raise his rating just a little higher. If he wants to – Lucas never applied for the FM title, but he has told us that he does want the IM title.

Van Wely and Peeters handed out the prizes for the Open to the winner – the same one as last year: Abhijeet Gupta, number 2 Chanda Sandipan, numbers 3-7 – Babu Lalith, Sundar Shyam, Lucas van Foreest, Oleg Romanishin and Casper Schoppen, and numbers 8-11 – Rakesh Jena, Sipke Ernst, S.Nitin and Lars Vereggen. About Gupta, who won the tournament for the second time in a row, Van Wely joked: ‘I don’t think he understood what it means to be invited back – we were just being polite.’ Maaike Keetman, who ended on 5½ points, received the rating prize, and there was a special attention for the visiting Jan Oldenkamp, who was the material supervisor for the tournament for 19 years.

Next, Van Wely thanked his staff, and then gave flowers to a number of indispensable ladies: Diny van der Weide, Roos Koekoek, Mila Bottema and Petra Huizer – and then also to Hou Yifan and her mother, who had stood by her for the entire week. Van Wely also thanked the sponsors, and introduced the artist Yvon Drummen, who had made the prizes for the match winners.

Ivan Sokolov, who had held off Jorden van Foreest, got a beautiful multi-colour terracotta chess game. ‘For our PR it would have been better if Jorden had won’, Van Wely joked. ‘But alas, my old comrade in battle beat him. Ivan, I’m still glad that you have kept the youth under your thumb for a little longer.’ ‘I did my best to lose, especially with Black’, Sokolov apologized. ‘But my opponent didn’t cooperate.’ 

Nigel Short, whose vast experience also prevailed against Hou Yifan, received a sculpture of a head with chess patterns. ‘Chess can get under your skin’, Yvon Drummen explained. Van Wely said he would also have preferred to see Hou Yifan win, ‘but for Nigel it was a matter of life and death, and he fought very hard.’ And, referring to Short’s notorious New In Chess article about chess-playing women: ‘Now you can go on writing your columns and say whatever you want.’

Alderman Jan Steenbergen, who held his speech in English, called the chess tournament, with 216 players from 15 countries, a perfect match with the ‘city of sports’ Hoogeveen. ‘Press reports say that the event was very spectacular, and exciting till the very end. The Open was dominated by Indians, but some Dutch players also performed very strongly.’ He thanked the competitors, the members of the press and all the staff of the city hall: ‘They have made this 20^th edition a real happening. I hope we can welcome you again next year, and that the 21st edition will be unforgettable.’

Toernooidirecteur Loek van Wely sprak bij de sluiting van een mooie jubileumeditie, met “twee topmatches met spannend schaak, en een goede bezetting in het Open toernooi. Ook hadden we ditmaal een mooie kunstexpositie van Yvon Drummen, die tevens de prijzen heeft vervaardigd. Ik hoop dat iedereen het naar de zin heeft gehad.”

Vervolgens reikte Van Wely samen met hoofdarbiter Frans Peeters de prijzen uit van de Amateurgroep 1 (groep 2 was ‘s ochtends al afgerond). Met 8 uit 8 won hier Oele Dijkhuis de eerste prijs, een jeugdspeler over wie een concurrent had gezegd: “Wat is dat ventje goed!”. Tweede t/m zevende werden Christiaan Mol, Henk Sijen, David Knight, Harry Boerkamp, Dick Stavast en Bartelo Oegema.

Van Wely uitte vreugde over het feit dat er weer normen waren gescoord in de Open groep. En verder: “Ik maakte me zorgen over de Indiase dominantie en dacht: als dit verkeerd gaat moeten wij India ook maar eens gaan binnenvallen. Maar vandaag heb ik zitten rekenen en het blijkt dat ze samen 28 ratingpunten hebben gewonnen. Ik vraag me af of dat voldoende reden is om hen te straffen.” Het antwoord liet hij nog even in het midden. “Nederland liet het een beetje afweten, met uitzondering van Lucas van Foreest – ik had het liever andersom gezien”, zei hij plagerig.

De normcertificaten werden uitgereikt aan Casper Schoppen (14, zijn eerste IM-norm), Lucas van Foreest (15) en de 15-jarige Rakesh Kumar Jena, voor wie het de derde IM-norm was. Van Foreest haalde 3 punten uit 5 partijen tegen grootmeesters; met zijn eerdere GM-norm meegerekend heeft hij nu drie normen en mag hij, als zijn rating nog iets verder stijgt, de titel aanvragen. Als hij wil – de FM-titel heeft hij nooit aangevraagd, maar Lucas gaf in de wandelgangen aan dat hij de IM-titel wel wil.

Van Wely en Peeters reikten de prijzen voor het Open uit aan de winnaar – dezelfde als vorig jaar: Abhijeet Gupta, nummer 2 Chanda Sandipan, nummers 3 tot en met 7 Babu Lalith, Sundar Shyam, Lucas van Foreest, Oleg Romanishin en Casper Schoppen, en de nummers 8 tot en met 11 Rakesh Jena, Sipke Ernst, S.Nitin en Lars Vereggen. Ivan, ik ben toch blij dat je de jeugd nog even onder de duim hebt gehouden.” “Ik heb mijn best gedaan om te verliezen, zeker met zwart”, verontschuldigde Sokolov zich. “Maar mijn tegenstander werkte niet mee.”

Nigel Short, wiens ervaring tegen Hou Yifan ook de doorslag gaf, ontving een gebeeldhouwde kop met schaakmotieven, onder de naam ‘Schaakuitslag’. “Chess can get under your skin”, verduidelijkte Yvon Drummen. Van Wely had ook liever gezien dat Hou Yifan had gewonnen, zei hij, “maar voor Nigel was het een kwestie van leven of dood, en hij heeft keihard gevochten.” Verwijzend naar Short’s beruchte New In Chess-artikel over schakende vrouwen zei Van Wely: “Nu kun je doorgaan met columns schrijven, en zeggen wat je wilt.”

Wethouder Jan Steenbergen noemde in een Engelstalige speech het schaaktoernooi, met 216 spelers uit 15 landen, een perfecte combinatie met de sportgezinde stad Hoogeveen. “Uit de berichten in de pers werd ook duidelijk dat de strijd hier erg spectaculair was, en spannend tot het bittere einde. Het Open toernooi werd gedomineerd door Indiërs, maar sommige Nederlanders speelden ook erg sterk.” Hij dankte de spelers, de journalisten, de bestuursleden en alle medewerkers van het raadhuis: “Zij allen hebben van deze 20e editie een echte happening gemaakt. Ik hoop dat we u volgend jaar weer kunnen verwelkomen, en dat we van de 21e editie een onvergetelijke kunnen maken.”

For a moment things seemed to become tense, but until the last moment he had everything under control. The best player in the Open won the tournament again, just like last year: grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta from India.

And thus Gupta was again the deserved tournament winner – for the second time in succession. Never before seen in Hoogeveen!

For Lucas van Foreest this meant ‘just’ an IM norm. He was glad he hadn’t lost anyway. ‘That wouldn’t have been a good thing.’

Babu Lalith hadn’t really recovered from yesterday’s collapse against Lucas. Today again things went wrong for him against Chanda Sandipan, who ended up unshared second with this victory. And ‘old hand’ Oleg Romanishin still achieved shared third place after a shaky start, with a hard-fought win over Jan Werle.

There were two more happy young players. Rakesh Kumar Jena, who, just like Lucas van Foreest, is still only 15, achieved his master norm with ease, and today almost caught Sipke Ernst. The latter escaped in a rook vs rook + f- and h-pawn ending. A win would probably even have gained Jena a GM norm.

14-year-old Casper Schoppen also made an IM norm. He was under pressure for a long time against Hugo van Hengel, and he had almost equalized when his opponent exceeded the time limit. Maaike Keetman too made an excellent impression today by holding a difficult endgame against grandmaster Debashis Das to a draw, and ending on plus-2 in this strong field.

It happens sometimes: if a player wins a match before time, his attention fades. It happened to Short today, and Hou Yifan struck immediately with an elegant attack. She wasn’t really proud of it, as with accurate play Short wouldn’t have got into trouble. Ivan Sokolov won the other match with a draw. It was hard-fought, but Jorden van Foreest was the one who had been in danger.

Missing a tempo for the defence – and every tempo counts here. ‘This was a blunder’, Short said. ‘I should have played 27…Kh8.’ Hou Yifan agreed that in that case she wouldn’t have had any attacking chances. ‘So then I would have had to play 28.Rc3.’ It had been a bit of a gamble, because: ‘If I don’t have anything here, then it would have been better not to play Nh4 either. In some way I hoped I could play f2-f4 somewhere, but it didn’t really work.’

28.Qh6?? is not possible after the king move in view of 28…Ng8 29.Qf4 Bf6, and Black wins the knight on h4.

Another crucial moment: 26.Qxd6 Qa4 27.Rb3 h6 gives Black a very dangerous attack for two pawns, especially after a move like …Qa5!. ‘This is a kind of long-term Sicilian attack’, Sokolov said. Van Foreest seizes his best chance.

Het leek nog even spannend te worden, maar hij had tot het laatste moment alles onder controle. De beste speler van het Open won opnieuw het toernooi, net als vorig jaar: grootmeester Abhijeet Gupta uit India.

Het eindspel dat nu ontstaat belooft niet veel voor wit. De andere poging was 17.Dxd6 Dxd6 18.Txd6 Lxf4 19.Txc6 Kd7 en wit heeft een gezonde pluspion. Ook hier heeft zwart wat druk, maar het lijkt minder dan in de partij. “Deze stelling is remise”, meende Lucas.

Bij Babu Lalith was het débacle van gisteren tegen Lucas blijkbaar hard aangekomen, want ook vandaag ging het mis tegen Chanda Sandipan, die met zijn zege de ongedeeld tweede plaats opeiste. En oudgediende Oleg Romanishin reikte na een stroeve start toch nog tot een gedeeld derde plaats via een hardbevochten zege op Jan Werle.

Er waren ook nog twee blije jeugdspelers. De net als Lucas van Foreest pas 15-jarige Rakesh Kumar Jena haalde ruim zijn meesternorm en had vandaag bijna Sipke Ernst nog gepakt. Deze ontsnapte in een eindspel van toren tegen toren plus f- en h-pion. Winst had Jena waarschijnlijk zelfs een GM-norm opgeleverd.

De 14-jarige Casper Schoppen behaalde ook een IM-norm. Hij stond lang onder druk tegen Hugo van Hengel en had de stelling net bijna gelijkgetrokken toen zijn tegenstander door zijn digitale vlag ging. Ook Maaike Keetman maakte vandaag weer een uitstekende indruk door een lastig eindspelletje tegen grootmeester Debashis Das op remise te houden en in dit sterke veld op plus-2 te eindigen.

Het komt vaker voor: als een speler een match voortijdig wint verslapt de aandacht. Dat gebeurde Short vandaag, en Hou Yifan sloeg onmiddellijk toe met een elegante aanval. Zelf was ze er niet onverdeeld tevreden over, omdat Short met nauwkeurig spel niet in de problemen zou zijn gekomen. Ivan Sokolov won de andere match met een remise. Die was weliswaar zwaarbevochten, maar het was vooral Jorden van Foreest die in gevaar was geweest.

Het is weer ‘ladies first’ vandaag. Na een onoplettendheid van Short won Hou Yifan in een type aanval waar elke witspeler van droomt in het Spaans.

Mist een tempo voor de verdediging – het luistert heel nauw nu. “Dit was een blunder”, zei Short. “Ik had 27…Kh8 moeten spelen.” Hou Yifan was het ermee eens dat ze in dat geval geen aanvalskansen zou hebben gehad: “Dan had ik 28.Tc3 moeten doen.” Het was wel een soort gok van haar, want: “Als ik hier niets heb had ik ook beter niet Ph4 kunnen spelen. Op de een of andere manier hoopte ik ergens f2-f4 te kunnen doen, maar dat zat er nooit echt in.” 28.Dh6?? is in dit geval niet mogelijk wegens 28…Pg8 29.Df4 Lf6 en zwart wint een stuk op h4.

28…Le7 was een betere verdediging. Dan heeft wit een andere voortzetting van de aanval: 29.Phf5! Lxf5 (29…gxf5? 30.Txf5!) 30.Pxf5 Lf8 31.Dh4 Pfd7 (31…Ph5 32.g4 Pf4 33.Txf4 exf4 34.Df6 Te5 35.Pxd6 Lxd6 36.Dxd6 Pc4 met waanzinnige complicaties, die voornamelijk, zoals gebruikelijk, eindigen in 0.00) 32.Ph6+ Lxh6 33.Dxh6 f6 34.h4 en wit heeft het initiatief.

Na de tekstzet komt zwart een tempo tekort in de verdediging, en Hou Yifan maakt het keihard en elegant af.

De dame springt het hol van de leeuw binnen. “Ik besloot te proberen wat pionnen te pakken en dan hopelijk de tegenaanval te overleven”, zei Van Foreest.

Zwart had all-out kunnen gaan met 17…Tac8 om de a-pion ook nog te geven. Nu had wit de aanval enigszins kunnen ophouden met 18.Db7.

Deze zet leek Sokolov nog iets forcerender dan 20…Pxd5, maar daar kwam hij even later van terug. Na slaan op d5 kan volgen: 21.Lxb5 Pc7! en alle onderste rij-matjes zijn precies afgedekt: 22.Db6 Pxb5 23.Pxb5 Txc2+ 24.Txc2 Txc2+ 25.Kd1 h6 en zwart wint in de aanval.

“Toen ik 20…Dg5 speelde dacht ik, ik heb hier zo veel zetten… maar na deze zet zag ik het niet meer zo helder”, bekende Sokolov.

Minder goed was 22…Dxh4 23.Pb5! (na 23.Dxd6 bxa3 24.b3, wat Van Foreest opperde, heeft zwart 24…Pg6; 23.Da4!? vond Sokolov heel onduidelijk) 23…b3 24.axb3 Dg5 25.Pd4 Pxd5 26.Pxf5 Dxf5 27.Kb1 gevolgd door 28.Dd3 en wit consolideert.

Opnieuw een cruciaal moment: 26.Dxd6 Da4 27.Tb3 h6 geeft zwart een zeer gevaarlijke aanval voor twee pionnen, vooral na een zet als …Da5!. “Dit is een soort langetermijn Siciliaanse aanval”, zei Sokolov. Van Foreest pakt zijn beste kans.
